A brilliant addition to the DTA Dunny Show 2 this year is none other than Quiccs! Juanito Maiquez otherwise known as his moniker Quiccs hails from Mandaluyong City, Philippines, and has been terrorizing the toy art world with his own creative style for a while now.
A proud member of the Red Mutuca studios, Quiccs utilizes influences of tech and classic samurai cultures to pave the way into his own unique creations and also customized platforms we cheerish! His resin MEGATEQ63 has becomg widley known and sought after while the most recent Akira Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress inspired “The Ghost of Kurosawa” bust from FlabSlab was one of the biggest hits at STGCC! His work will most definitely look good on our most loved Dunny!
Who are you? (background, inspirations, etc.)
My name is Quiccs. Im a Graphic Artist, Toy Designer, and Graffiti Artist from Manila, Philippines. I’ve been drawing and painting since i was a kid, took the path of Graphic Design as my profession, and currently doing toy design and graffiti as my true love :) Growing up during the 80’s and 90’s exposed me to a lot of Japanese Mecha and American Hiphop influences, and the merge of these are the core sources of my art style. I represent the Designer toy collective Red Mutuca, filipino art collective Pilipinas Street Plan, and my design studio Burnwater Design Studios.
What attracts you to using designer toys as the canvas for your art?
Designer toys allow people to enjoy an artist’s vision and at the same time bring out that inner child inside them. All of us enjoyed our childhood growing up with toys, and as we grow up to have our own money, some of us are naturally drawn to obtain toys that make us happy, toys that look good to us, toys that make us feel young again, toys created through the vision of artists we look up to and admire, toys that somewhat give us satisfaction of being part of our daily lives inside our homes. I believe that the Urban Designer Toy Scene in particular as well is heavily connected to the arts and subcultures that I heavy respect for – Graffiti, Graphic Design, Hiphop Music, and Urban Fashion.
Doing Designer Toys has also allowed me to meet new friends and work with amazingly talented people whom I share the same passion with – my artist friends from the Red Mutuca Collective, Pilipinas Street Plan, FLABSLAB, Secret Fresh, just to name a few.
What was the inspiration for your piece in the exhibition?
I have been a huge fan of Kidrobot since I started out doing my toy designs and customs, which i think should be pretty obvious if one takes a glance through my works. The piece that I am working on for the show is a culmination of my style within my journey as a toy designer trough the years that I have created toys using Kidrobot’s platforms and releases, specifically the Munny and most especially the Dunny.
