Junko Mizuno is a self-taught artist from Tokyo who is recognized for her unique visual iconography of powerful and often sexy women. Motivated by the pure pleasure of creating art, she celebrates the power of women and creates a universe of them, full of energy, both positive and negative. While her art refuses to be categorized, her work has been featured around the world in stores, museums, fine art galleries, and Kidrobot vinyl art toys! Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we’re proud to present a new Blood Red edition of her Witch Queen art figure. We asked Junko to tell us more about her evocative design.
Kidrobot: Who is the Witch Queen?
Junko Mizuno: The Witch character was first created in 2010 for my first silkscreen gig poster for a Faith No More show. I really loved her, so I made her one of the main characters for my 2015 art show titled Triad. The show was about three characters: Nurse the healer, Wrestler the fighter, and the Witch who is the creator of all, also a shapeshifter who can be anything and be free. She has been in my work in different forms since then, including my 2019 La Flamme 8-inch Dunny.

KR: What inspired your figure design?
JM: It was first designed to look like a famous character but was declined by the licensor, so we decided to turn it into an original figure instead. I just thought she would be perfect to take the place. She is a witch but also a queen and a creator. I replaced the apple with a heart that represents life.
KR: Why red?
JM: I wanted to make a red version to contrast with the black version, and I thought Blood Red would be perfect as she has a heart that sends blood throughout our bodies. I’m not a very romantic person, and I really didn’t imagine her love story, but I’m sure she will celebrate the passion of lovers as much as she celebrates life, power and energy.
