Commemorating the 20(ish) anniversary of the landmark hip-hop album, “3 Feet High and Rising” we joined forces with De La Soul and Myong Kurily to recreate its three members in vinyl form. The 3-pack releases March 18, but you can win it now!

My favorite song has to be "Me, Myself, and I" off of 3 Feet High and Rising. My friends and I had a band in high school. We loved Rage Against The Machine, Led Zeppelin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and wrote original material trying to be as awesome as our influences were. We participated in and lost the school's Battle of the Bands for two years, though we felt we were clearly superior to any other band in the school. In our senior year we entered the the Battle of the Bands again, but decided to put together a hip hop cover band named Doctor Thunder and The Perpetual Motion Machine. We called in a friend to play keyboard, gave ourselves some ridiculous names and costumes, and put together a set list that included Run-DMC, Grandmaster Flash, and, among others, De La Soul. We performed Me, Myself and I, and it went over very well. We didn't win the Battle even for a third year, but more importantly we learned about some great music, and the relationships and memories made from all that time in the band will last me a lifetime.

My favorite song by De La Soul is "Oooh" ft. Redman which I saw way back in the day in 2000. Saw it on the MuchMusic television channel and I remember it definitely catching my ear's attention when I first heard it.
I must also mention that lately I've been listening to the new Gorillaz album "Plastic Beach" and absolutely love the track that De La Soul has taken a part of. The track is called "Superfast Jellyfish". You all should check it out :)

Buddy – First time I heard this song was also the first time I heard hiphop. I moved to the US from a refugee camp in Austria around 1990 and lived in a shitty apartment in a shitty neighborhood. I couldn't speak a lick of english and spent the majority of my childhood unable to make any friends due to the language barrier EXCEPT for the Nigerian kid that lived in the next apartment over whose family was basically in the same situation as mine (except that they'd been there longer and were a bit more integrated in American life. I was over one day playing with legos with this kid that I couldn't understand or make understand what I was trying to say when his older brother put this tape on. It was unlike anything I had heard my entire short existence but it's had a pretty damn deep hold on me every since.
Most certainly a fan for life.

I went to see one of their 20th Anniversery Tour Shows in Melbourne, Australia in 2009! I was fully dressed up in 90th hip hop clothing and made a awesome 3 pastle colour way jumper with "DE LA MY SOUL" printed on the front.

The "Plug" names are alleged to come from the numbers that each bandmate's microphone was labeled on the soundboard. Posdnuos was always plugged into plug one, Trugoy was plugged into plug two, and so forth.
"D.A.I.S.Y. Age" (an acronym standing for "da inner sound, y'all")
Trugoy when reversed spells yogurt, because he likes yogurt, and Posdnuos spelled backwards is "sound sop".

My older brother had put music on to my iPod one day and on a train ride months after the fact that he did I came across The Grind Date and instantly got hooked. My favorite De La Soul song will always and forever be "Breakadawn"! The first time I heard it I was 13 years old. I just came home from training and was deadbeat tired. It was passed 11pm, i just reheated leftovers, grabbed my books and homework, plopped myself down in front of the tv and turned it to BET…..aww sookie sookie now, Midnight Love was on! Right after they played "Two Occasions" by the Deele, this hip hop song came on which totally distracted me from my geometry, and the feeling that sparked was instantaneous love! Maybe it's because I was a die hard fan of "Off the Wall" since age 4 and loved "Can't Help It" by MJ. Maybe it was because I was 13 and something about the lyrics oozed nostalgia and warmth….the beat and the rhythm of the lyrics truly made me want to EXPLODE! I love love this song to this very day…..aaaahhh but back in the day…..

De La constantly keeps me in awe so it's a toss up between the Native Tongue 12" remix of Buddy and A Rollerskating Jam called Saturdays. I heard /saw the video for Buddy the first time on Video Music Box with Ralph McDaniels and was in awe of all those emcees killing it on one track. I remember hanging out with a friend in '89, and his older brother had just gotten an imported Mini Cooper. He was taking us for a ride , to show it off, and he popped the "Best of the Year" mix he had made into one of those old tape recorders (the Mini's stereo was either broken, or it didn't have one, I can't recall). Somewhere in between Love and Rockets and The Pixies, "Buddy" came on, and (at the age of 9, having never really heard much hip hop) my friend and I thought this was the best song ever. For the next few years, one of us would always start, "Just like kissin' cousins," and the other would respond, "Yeah, that's kinda clever." This was never in any sort of context, and must have gotten on the nerves of everyone around us, but it cracked us up. So yeah, anyway, "Buddy" is still my favorite song.
